Brown rice-superior to White rice

Rice is the second most staple diet in the world. For billions of people their meal is incomplete without rice.Rich is a rich source of carbonhydrates.Though it is brown rice that gives the important nutrients the body needs, ever since the invention of rice mills, people have learned to eat the polished rice-the white rice.

To compare white rice with brown rice, white rice is white because of the full polishing that is given to the rice.Brown rice can be either fully brown, depending on the extent to which it has been polished.
Soaking the brown rice for about 30 minutes before cooking it is necessary as soaking softens the bran layer on the seed.

It is the flavour that makes people love brown rice once they have tried it.Brown rice has an appetizing flavour of its own, while white rice is often enhanced with other flavours.

White rice has a longer shelf  life as compared to brown rice.Brown rice develops a rancid flavour if stored unrefrigerated for more than six months. This is due to the natural oils in the bran layer becoming stale with time.
There about twelve varieties of B-vitamins in the rice bran. The bran removed at the time of polishing rice, with all its twelve nutrients,is used for making medicines that are useful for people with vitamin deficiency. The rice that we get after the first polish is not yet pure white. To make it whiter, the rice is milled again. With that another 30% of nutrients  are lost.Remaining bran of the second milling is fed to cows, buffalos and other animals so that they can grow well. And now what is left is white polished rice with 20% nutrients. This 20% nutrients is what we all eat everyday.

It is widely believed that brown rice helps control blood pressure and also reduces wide fluctuations in blood sugar. The high fibre content of brown rice has a good effect on controlling cholesterol and cholesterol control is of prime importance in keeping away heart diseases.

Eating brown rice is extremely good for you if you wish to stick to a healthy diet with the added benefit that in the long run will help you maintain your weight at a sensible level.
